About Exponent
Exponent is a comprehensive interview preparation platform for tech jobs. Exponent's mission is to help candidates through the hiring process, making sure candidates in the Exponent community feel prepared going into intense interview loops at top companies.
"This matters now more than ever because the stakes are so high for candidates' career progression. So we want to help - we're trying to tighten the feedback loop from our community back to our community."
— Product Lead, Exponent
The Challenge
A core part of what makes Exponent so valuable to candidates is that they have up-to-date information on how best to prepare for interviews in the current market, available in Exponent's Interview Experiences page. That intelligence has always come from people: candidates and subject matter experts describing their own experiences in live calls with the Exponent team's expert career coaches.
"For interview loops, AI really lags behind. Ask vanilla ChatGPT or even Perplexity, and they'll give you information that they got last year. In the age of AI, last year is ancient, and interview loops are changing very rapidly. With easy access to unverified AI content out there, people are saying, 'I need something real'. You need to know what's happening right now, and we have an ear to the ground through our community."
— Product Lead, Exponent
But sourcing that real-time intelligence meant relying on a small number of human career coaches. Their calendars were a hard limit on how much real-time insight Exponent could actually collect from candidates. And scheduling a time with candidates often took time, adding a week or two before the Exponent team was able to capture answers.
The Solution
Scaling Interviewing – and Choosing Persona
Exponent's answer was to scale the interviewing itself: by bringing on Persona. The Exponent team wanted to give participants two options: either speak to the Exponent team or speak to an AI interviewer. The AI interviews were not a replacement for coach-led calls – they were a way to run more interviews.
The Exponent team evaluated several options in the space and chose Persona because of Persona's unique API capabilities and in-product embeddability (more on these later) and because of the Persona team's hands-on support.
Prompted to Interview Like an Expert, Not a Script
The Exponent team trained Persona's AI interviewer to understand the dynamic of these calls, with direct, hands-on iteration between the Exponent team and Persona's team, and then put it in front of their users.
Over time, the AI interviewer came to mimic the team's own interviewing instincts: smartly navigating a conversation, reframing questions, and following the thread of what a candidate actually said.
"We compared it with the output of human interviews — the responses were comparable. Candidates are more comfortable sharing with an AI interviewer to protect their anonymity and to be flexible with their schedules when a human interviewer isn't available."
— Product Lead, Exponent
The Results
Quality the Team Could Trust
At some point, quality exceeded the teams' thresholds, and the dynamic shifted – the Exponent team was able to start taking inspiration from the AI interview calls and use the AI interview to crystallize what they were looking for. This gave the Exponent team confidence to scale up Persona calls alongside ongoing coach-led calls.
"I think Persona helped us crystallize what we were actually looking for in these calls."
— Product Lead, Exponent
"At this point, in fact, I'm taking inspiration from the AI on how to run my SME calls to get more interview questions."

Key Insight
Always-On Interviews, Embedded in the Product
During the testing and iteration phase, Exponent deployed the interview link the way most research teams do: emailing a batch of candidates a link and waiting. That worked, but it came with a built-in delay.
The goal was always to put the interviews in the product itself and to stream data directly back to Exponent via Persona's API and MCP — capabilities that Persona uniquely makes possible. That way, the Exponent team could capture always-on, in-the-moment feedback from candidates, rather than relying on one-off email blasts. And they can instantaneously pipe the candidate feedback from Persona interviews into the rest of their product.
Once the Exponent team felt the results from the AI interviews were strong enough, they moved the interviewer in-product – linking from the Exponent website to the Persona interviewer. Moving Persona to an in-product link meaningfully increased how many people saw the interview option and completed interviews.
"I used to have to tell people, 'we're interested in what you have to say, here's a link, we'll find time' — that's a one to two week lead time. But with Persona, you either schedule with us, or if you don't have time, just talk to our AI interviewer. You can do it right now."

A Solution for Scaled Interviewing
Asked what would happen if Persona disappeared tomorrow, Exponent's product lead pointed to a capability the whole team now depends on.
"With Persona, we've got something that works, and we can make it scale. Having that is a bedrock of potential that enables us to scale up information gathering and pass back the value to our community in different ways. If for some reason we didn't have Persona tomorrow, we'd have to go back to the drawing board on how to solve that problem for our community."

Why It Matters
Exponent's experience shows what it looks like to use an AI interviewer to gather fresh, first-hand intelligence from real people.
- Real human answers are the moat — When interview loops shift constantly, real-time, community-sourced intelligence is exactly what a general-purpose AI model trained on last year's data can't replicate. This is true in many other markets, too.
- Convenience compounds — Cutting a one-to-two-week scheduling lead time down to "talk to it right now" significantly boosts response rates, something we've seen across all customer domains.
- In-product AI interviews — Persona is the only solution that's easy to fully embed – with API and MCP support and an in-product code snippet – making it possible to capture feedback when it's most relevant.
- An AI interviewer can scale an expert's judgment, not just their questions — The Persona and Exponent teams worked hand in hand to tweak the AI interviews to mimic expert interviews' actual interviewing style, unlocking depth from AI interviews.
- The value shows up as a dependency, not just a metric — When asked what losing Persona would cost, Exponent's answer wasn't a number — it was "we'd be back to the drawing board."
